The Perfect Guide for a Tour of Los Angeles!
Even though I live close to Los Angeles, it doesn't mean i know every hot spot to stop off at. Well...this guide book will tell you all the major attractions there are in L.A. waiting for you!

This book gives pictures, maps, and guidelines which will help a tourist know what to expect when they arrive. There are some excellent views looking into downtown Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Hollywood Sign, etc... There is a pretty long section in the book about the history of Los Angeles, giving neat facts that are interesting.

The book covers some of the main attractions- Rodeo Drive, Union Station, Walk of Fame, Knott's Berry Farm (which is located in Orange County), Watts Towers, Playboy Mansion, and much more. This guide gives you insights on famous towns- Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Long Beach- and also insights on famous streets and boulevards- Santa Monica Boulevard, Wilshire Boulevard, Hollywood Boulevard (that's where the Walk of Fame is located), and Sunset Boulevard.

The book talks about the valleys-San Fernando Valley, San Gabriel Valley, and the more rural, Santa Clarita-and canyons, the south bay, and even gives tips on places to go for day trips which include: Orange County, San Diego County, Ventura County, and Santa Barbara.

If would like to know a little more about the city of Los Angeles and its suburbs, then this is the book for you! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Great Insight
This guide provides the most insight into this misunderstood city. The 306 pages have just as many pictures as pages letting you picture what you want to see before ending up in a bad part of town.

Covers Alaska...mountaintop to the Sea
Insight Guides Alaska is a wonderful book to own if you're dreaming of or are about to visit America's "Final Frontier". Covering Alaska from the Panhandle to the Arctic...from The Interior to the Aleutian Islands. In this book you will find interesting facts on Alaska's history and view beautiful color pictures--which more than convince you to see this place someday.

This book covers the major "cities" of Alaska...and offers a quiet retreat. While I read it I listened to some peaceful music--as if I was on a vacation.

Gorgeous full-color photographs illustrate this account
Co-written by anthropologist Ann Fienup-Riordan (who has lived with and written about Inupiaq and Yupik peoples for almost 30 years), Alaskan Native American Susie Silook, and Alaska native language expert Lawrence D. Kaplan, Inupiaq And Yupik People Of Alaska is an informed and informative survey of Inupiaq and Yupik Native American communities as they strive and struggle to stay in touch with traditional means of survival and values in a world increasingly cluttered with intrusive modern technology. Gorgeous full-color photographs illustrate this striking account, which is highly recommended for university and community library Native American reference collections and reading lists.

Island States at Risk: Global Climate Change, Development and Population (Journal of Coastal Research. Special Issue, No. 24)
Published in Hardcover by Coastal Education & Research Foundation (October, 1997)
Author: Stephen P. Leatherman
Average review score:

Islands as front line Indicators of Risk
Dr. Leatherman gathers scholarly papers from a variety of scientists and researchers all over the world who focus on island environments. This volume makes a very convincing case for taking action. It becomes clear that while some of the vulnerabilities to risk are commonly held, the means and financial ability to cope with the risk varies enormously. This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in potential effects of climate change and sea level rise on developing countries. While climate change impacts are still uncertain, there are enough man-made coastal environmental problems that are ongoing, that it will inevitably make things worse. This is a must-read for anyone interested in this topic.

Islands of Samoa: Reference Map of Tutuila, Manu'A, 'Upolu, and Savai'I

an outstanding map of the Samoas
As the author of Tonga-Samoa Handbook, I've used James A. Bier's map of the Samoas many times to check dubious place name spellings or to verify geographical information. The detailed index makes finding places a breeze and the drawing is amazingly clear. I recommend this map highly.

It Happened in Nevada
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (01 March, 2001)
Author: Elizabeth Gibson
Average review score:

well-researched, easy Western history read
One of the great weaknesses in the teaching of history, by and large, is to believe that we need not be creative in how we go about it. With this book, Gibson has researched and documented a collection of Nevada stories from ancient times to the late 1990s.

These thirty quick reads are arranged chronologically and cover events ranging from Anasazi times to the Comstock Lode to the modern speed record attempts at the Salt Flats. The array of topics touched upon is too broad to list here, but ranges from aboriginal to judicial to economic to industrial to political and beyond. In addition to a lengthy bibliography, a nice collection of Nevada-related facts wraps up the book.

I find Gibson's approach to debatable historical topics (such as, for example, the fate of Butch Cassidy) to be refreshingly dispassionate; I do not get the impression that she was ever predisposed to any conclusion, and was open to whatever she might discover--an approach too many historical writers fail to emulate. The result is high credibility for that which she presents to us.

Maybe some of the greedmongers who run Las Vegas can give a little back to their state by purchasing enough of these for every school in the state of Nevada--it would be a welcome way to interest children in history. Recommended, in any event, for those who appreciate Western history presented with hardly a preconceived notion or bias to be found.
